Following the Prime Minister’s statement on 23 March which introduced tight restrictions on people leaving their homes, the Bishops of the Church of England join with the Archbishop of Canterbury in the following message:
“In the light of the Government’s measures announced by the Prime Minister this evening, we urge everyone to follow the instructions given. We will give a fuller statement of advice as soon as possible. Let us continue to pray, to love, to care for the vulnerable and to build our communities even while separated.”
Church buildings should now close for private prayer, along with any public gatherings, and will not host weddings or baptisms. More detailed guidance will follow soon.
A Message from your clergy at this testing time.
‘Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.’
(John 14 v.27)
These words, spoken by Jesus to his close friends at the last supper on the eve of his crucifixion, have brought comfort and strength to individuals and communities in times of uncertainty ever since. Although regular public worship has been suspended due to the Coronavirus precautions, the Church is here to pray for and serve our Community. I write to clarify what we can offer across our Benefice.
At the bottom of this page you will find prayers you may like to use at home.
In addition, we are offering to support people who feel anxious, lonely or have lost friends or loved ones. Many of our members and ministers are over 70 or vulnerable themselves, but amongst them we have trained listeners and counsellors who have offered to make phone calls to those who need support and comfort. Please contact us via e-mail or telephone using the contact details below.
We will also upload the text of Sunday Sermons or Lent reflections (keep scrolling down!).
With our best wishes and prayers:
